Blogging Tips for Beginners: What is SEO?? Most people have no idea what the three letters S, E, and O mean together. It sounds pretty intimidating at first, eliciting thoughts that you have to be a tech genius to understand this concept. It's okay: I didn't get it either starting out. It wasn't until I plugged into the training of a top SEO expert that it was explained to me. He revealed to me all the secrets of on page Search Engine optimization (On page SEO), which is how you tell a search engine like Google what your blog is about and where they should put it in a given related search. Once I got it, it wasn't complicated to do, it was SIMPLE. In fact it's so easy, a caveman could do it. I mean it. Don't give me that look... You want me to prove it? I accept your challenge! In this article of Blogging Tips for Beginners, I will explain to you the 7 simple steps to fully optimize your blog On Page for a specific keyword or phrase. Bear with me on this one, I promise it's easier than you might think. (SEO-Blogg-Spot)

  • #1 - Keyword Research The first half of the equation is as follows: in order to "Rank" or have your page come before others in a set of search results for a keyword or phrase, you need a keyword or phrase! What are you blogging about? Piano? The Lakers? Fly fishing? Whatever you are writing about, the topic of your blog is what you keyword is.

  • One thing that I will teach right here and now is how to do Keyword Research, which will allow you to find keywords or phrases specifically that people are searching for monthly. If you're topic is Cats, but you want it to be targeted at a particular thing such as "How Cats Mate" for instance. You can use an online tool such as Google AdWords, which will tell you how many people are searching for that particular phrase monthly. Then you can see related keyword phrases and how many people are searching for them as well.

  • This is important for knowing what people are searching for so you can reach more of your target audience. When I did the research on how cats mate (just now) I found that the number of monthly global searches is 14,800, and the local monthly search number is 6,600. This is great, and what is even better is that there is a low competition, meaning that no one else is really trying to rank for it. This gives you a chance to get your page seen for this particular phrase, and then you get to land a global audience of 14,800 people monthly! Pretty cool huh? If you do the proper on page Search engine optimization, you can get your blog on the first page of Google. This is important especially if you have a product you want to offer to people of that target audience. Keep in mind however that you should look for how many other pages there are out there at the same time that you're competing against. When I did a search, I found that there are 280,000 results. Make sure to put your phrase in quotes so that you get the real result for that exact phrase, otherwise it includes more results that aren't related (a total of 13 million just to give you an idea of the difference). You want to aim for between 30,000 and 300,000 (which "How cats mate" falls in by the way) as a beginner so you can easily compete for the keyword on your blog. Got all that? Good, because it's all smooth sailing from here!

  • #2 - Seo Score and Keyword Density Now that you have you keyword, it's time to alert your attention to SEO Score. This is a percentage that you want to get as high as you can. It's determined by 12 factors that I will categorize in a bit. The first of the 12 however is something else of special notice, and that's Keyword density. This percentage number is how much your keyword appears in proportion to how many words are in you blog (Word Press blogs keep a count for you below much like Microsoft Word does). You want to aim for 1.21% (the magic number) but anything below 1% or above 2.5 is bad. This number lets the search engine know if your keyword is relevant, and makes sure it's not being spammed in your article. My particular keyword phrase for instance is "Blogging tips for Beginners" and If you are looking at this article in my blog, you can look for how many times I use the phrase "Blogging tips for Beginners" to get a sense of how I use it to compensate for my large amount of words (for those reading this as a published article, I removed the keyword from my headers to reduce redundancy).

  • #3 - First and Last Sentence The next thing is to have your keyword in the first and last sentence. This is easier than you might think. If you create a header with your keyword, you got it. You can also put it in a final "call to action such as mine for my blog: "If you like this post on 'Blogging tips for Beginners - SEO?? On page Search Engine Optimization 101', retweet, share and comment please!"

  • #4 - Internal Link and external links Next up are links. You want to have a link to you other pages in your blog. This can be done easily by linking other posts, or to other pages of your domain. This is an internal link. An external link is one that does not stay within your domain and goes to another site. Here, you have to add "rel=nofollow" to your external links (right after the "href=" which you can only see in the HTML view of your post mind you) This you don't have to do, but it can help your overall score.

  • #5 - Images This one is simple: Add an image, and then go into it's properties (within your blog domain, either as you're posting it or after you post it in your blog) and find the ALT Tag, or alternate text space. Once you do, just plug your keyword in there. Usually the properties are accessed by clicking a little picture icon once you click your image. Easy right? The next steps are even easier than this!

  • #6 - Header tags There are three different tags to use here: H1, H2 and H3. These are headers, and are applied ether on a visual view of your post by highlighting a title with your keyword you want as a header (like the one for this tip for instance) and going into your text options (a dropdown menu) and then simply selecting Heading 1, 2 or 3. You can also do this HTML Style by surrounding your phrase with "

    " and "

" (to get 2 and 3 just replace the number). Be sure to use all 3 at least once.

  • #7 - Highlights This is the last, but easiest step. Simply bold, underline and italicize you keyword separately. You haven't seen me do all three to Blogging tips for Beginners, but you just witnessed the last of the 3 done just now. If you are using HTML, highlight the phrase and click the buttons corresponding to each. You can also manually do it: just put inside these symbols (keyword here): the code "strong" for bold, the code "em" for italics, an the code "u" for underline. Be sure to watch out for your "u" code, it may change to a large coding that will make it so your word isn't underlined.
